San Diego, CA – Four Killed in Multi-Car Crash on SR 163

San Diego, CA (July 19, 2024) – At least four people were killed in a multi-car crash Friday morning, July 19, on southbound State Route 163 in the Kearny Mesa area, said the California Highway Patrol.

The incident was first reported around 1:30 a.m. Roughly 30 minutes later, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced all lanes were blocked in the impacted area, which was located slightly north of Interstate 805 near the overpass.

According to CHP investigators, a Toyota Tacoma truck and two Prius’ collided in the southbound lanes of the freeway at the I-805 merge. At least some of the victims were inside one of the compact cars, which was rear-ended during the crash. Four victims were ultimately pronounced dead as a result of the collision, though the number of injured victims remains unknown. However, an inquiry is still underway, and anyone who witnessed or has information about the crash is asked to contact the California Highway Patrol San Diego Area.
