San Diego, CA (July 29, 2025) – A vehicle lost control and went off a Chula Vista street on Monday afternoon, July 28, striking and killing a maintenance worker who was working alongside the roadway. The crash happened just before 1:30 p.m. near the intersection of Allen School and Bonita Roads.
Chula Vista Police Department (CVPD) officers said an aqua green Toyota Prius was going eastbound on Bonita Road when the driver lost control, crossed five lanes of traffic, hit a parked vehicle, and went onto the sidewalk. The vehicle then crashed into the male worker, who died at the scene.
The driver, identified by police as a 28-year-old man, was the only person in the vehicle and stayed at the scene. He was given a sobriety test and then taken into custody pending charges of driving under the influence of drugs and vehicular manslaughter while impaired, according to the CVPD. He was not hurt in the crash.
CVPD was still investigating the cause of the crash as of Tuesday morning, however, and has not released further details. We extend our sincere sympathies to the family of the deceased individual.
