San Clemente, CA (July 23, 2024) – An investigation continued on Tuesday, July 23, into a crash on the Interstate 5 Freeway in San Clemente that killed a Caltrans worker. A 55-year-old man was killed in the crash that occurred around 9:35 a.m. on Monday on the northbound five just beyond Avenue Palizado, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) said.
CHP officials said the man and another worker had pulled over to the right shoulder to pick up debris when a Freeway Service Patrol tow truck driver veered off of the roadway and onto the shoulder, slammed into a Caltrans vehicle, and ran over the man. The reason the tow truck driver veered is unknown. The CHP said he was taken to a hospital for minor injuries.
The force of the collision launched the Caltrans vehicle into the air and over a curb, where it struck a Nissan Rogue driving up the onramp, CHP officials informed. The Nissan driver sustained minor injuries, as did the other Caltrans worker. However, no further details were released in the meantime, as the investigation into the incident remains ongoing. We offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim.
