Buena Park, CA (March 26, 2025) – A Caltrans contract worker was killed by a motorist at a construction site on a Southern California freeway late last week and has since been identified by officers.
According to officials with the California Highway Patrol, the incident unfolded in the westbound lanes of the 91 Freeway just before 4:00 a.m. in Buena Park. The exact details of the crash are under investigation, but officials said that a 22-year-old man behind the wheel of a 2020 Dodge Ram pickup truck struck 45-year-old Jose Mantecon, a resident of Corona.
The driver remained at the scene and performed CPR on the victim until paramedics arrived and rushed Mantecon to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. The 22-year-old pickup driver has not been publicly identified. Officials said he is cooperating with the investigation and that alcohol and or drugs are not suspected in the deadly collision.
