San Marcos, CA (July 28, 2024) – A driver was taken into custody on Saturday night, July 27, after a wrong-way crash on State Route 78 in San Marcos, authorities said.
The situation began to unfold around 11:30 p.m. Responding deputies saw a Honda Accord speeding out of the area, prompting them to attempt to pull over the driver for a traffic stop. Authorities said the driver refused and led deputies on a pursuit. Upon reaching Sycamore Avenue, the driver entered State Route 78 going the wrong way, the department explained in a press release.
Deputies immediately stopped the pursuit for safety reasons and informed the California Highway Patrol about the car going westbound on the eastbound lanes of SR 78. About 10 minutes later, authorities said calls came in reporting a traffic accident on the said route, near Rancho Santa Fe in San Marcos. EMTs responded and assessed multiple victims for injuries, though no further details were released. An investigation is ongoing in the interim. We hope all the injured victims make a swift recovery.
