San Diego, CA – Man Dies in Hit-and-Run Crash on Buena Creek Rd

San Diego, CA (July 25, 2025) – A man killed by a vehicle in a hit-and-run crash on a bike path over the weekend in Vista was identified by July 24.

On Sunday morning, Maxwell Frederick Rouette, 27, was found lying along a pedestrian path at the Inland Rail Trail bike path near 1923 Buena Creek Road, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

California Highway Patrol officials say a 38-year-old woman was driving a black Toyota RAV4 west on West Mission Road at North Pacific Street in the City of San Marcos when she veered off the road for unknown reasons and drove on the Inland Rail Trail bike path for four miles before striking a pedestrian who was walking on the bike path.

Rouette was pronounced dead at the scene due to multiple blunt force injuries, per medical officials. Later that day, officers arrested the woman not far from the crash site after leaving the scene, CHP said. In the meantime, CHP is asking anyone who has information or may have witnessed the crash to contact the Oceanside Area CHP office.
