Irvine, CA (October 6, 2024) – Five people were hospitalized, including two young children, following a crash early Sunday, October 6, involving a wrong-way driver suspected of drunken driving on the 73 Toll Road near Irvine, authorities said.
The collision occurred around midnight when the driver of a Toyota Camry struck a Lincoln MKZ headed south on the toll road north of Campus Drive. Two young children and their mother were hospitalized with significant injuries, along with the driver and passenger of the Lincoln MKZ, California Highway Patrol Officer Alexander Stirling said.
The wrong-way driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, Stirling said. It was unclear which car the mother and children were occupants of, though additional details about the crash were not available. An investigation is ongoing in the interim. We hope for the rapid recovery of all injured victims.
