How Is Fault Determined in a Multi-Car Accident in California?

The fault in a multi-car crash depends on the sequence of impacts and each driver’s actions. Investigators review police reports, photos, and witness statements to identify who started the chain of events. In many cases, more than one driver shares responsibility.

California follows a comparative negligence rule, which divides fault among multiple drivers. For example, if one car hits another and causes a third impact, both drivers may share blame. The California Highway Patrol’s report often helps determine liability.
